With the finest moonstones, such as this one, they earn their lyrical moniker. Striking blue flashes of color combine with an otherworldly glow that seems to light up the gemstones from within.
A winged insect bug is set with a teardrop-shaped cabochon, a superb blue moonstone of 3.2 carats. Set into 15k yellow gold, its wings are adorned with six antique diamonds. An old European cut diamond serves as a stylized head, and is also dotted with two tiny garnet eyes.
The total diamond weight adds up to .20 carats, color H-I, clarity SI1-2. Each wing has beaded gold work down the center along with rounded gold legs and even petite antennae.
The brooch rests within the original box of deep blue paper with gold tooled border, with the interior in blue velvet and cream silk printing of Ring & Cross, Ltd. Watchmaker's & Jewellers, College Crescent, Swiss Cottage (an area of London).
