Vintage Art Deco 1930s Mother of Pearl brooch with the word 'Our Mam' written. This type of brooch was typically given to a lady from her sweetheart or son, often a soldier or sailor before he left for duty, as a token of affection.
The word 'Our Mam' is mounted in a rolled gold wire on a mother of pearl base and secured with a rolled gold open 'c' clasp. Rolled gold is a thin layer of gold on a base metal and fused together by heating. The brooch has a small heart, anchor and cross dangling from the bottom with the lords prayer written onto it.
The anchor, cross and heart represent Faith, Hope and Charity. In the Victorian era an anchor symbolised hope and steadfastness, the symbol was often accompanied by a heart and cross symbolising 'Faith, Hope & Charity. Faith, Hope & Charity are a group of Christian martyred saints.
